Clubfeet & Teenage Suicide & Kap10Kurt

Clubfeet | Handsome Clothing Co.

My musical tastes always change during the summer months. The face melting electro that I normally favor falls to the backburner and out emerges the glistening easy listening tunes.

One of my older (only in blog terms. It’s only been released for 3 months) summery flavored favorites recently got a fresh new remix from Kap10Kurt and it has re-invigorated my love of “Teenage Suicide”. Now the more perceptive of you readers are probably wondering why a song about young people killing themselves is a favorite “summer tune”. I’m wondering the same thing. At least it’s telling kids not to do it instead of encouraging it.

It’s just one of those songs that you want to close your eyes to and stare at the sun while lying in a field of flowers (hopefully inhabited by magical gnomes that grant you wishes). Kap10Kurt takes the original and turns it into a cruising tune with warm synths and a reliable head bobbing beat.

Suicide never sounded so good.

Fake Blood Remixes Miike Snow’s Animal

fake blood| Handsome Clothing Co.

So yeah, We’ve pretty much posted every Miike Snow song and remix that comes out but I simply can not pass on a Fake Blood remix. Fake Blood kill me every time and this remix shows off their strong points once again. They don’t stray too far from the original, they keep the catchy hooks and melody, and they beef up everything in between with dance floor beats that can turn any room into a scene from Dirty Dancing.

Not much else to say. You know Miike Snow and you should know Fake Blood. That means you should know how good this song is.

BONUS: This goes out to Handsome’s good friend, Richy Rich. We requested this Fake Blood remix in some weird bar in Scotland and ended up clearing the dance floor, leaving only me and him jumping around like monkeys with down syndrome. Scottish people have poor taste in music.

The Big Pink

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

This song has been getting a lot of plays around here. As is wont to happen after I make a mix, I start searching for music that is a little slower and perhaps more melodic. I have found that perfect mix in The Big Pink’s “Velvet”.

I just found out about this electro-rock group from London, England, but they have already won the NME Philip Hall Radar Award for best new act.

“Velvet” is a huge and enveloping song. It sounds like something that M83, Oasis, and …And You Will Know Us By the Trial of Dead would make if they were all locked in a room for a weekend watching movies from the 90s. Makes sense to me.

BONUS: This Deloreon remix adds a bit of The Tough Alliance to that previous mixture of bands and any sound that can incorporate anything close to what The Tough Alliance sound like is a good thing to me. Expect less epic-ness and more dreaminess.

Make The Girl Dance

Monday, May 18, 2009

Nothing has really been blowing my mind on the music front in the last few days but there has been one song I keep coming back to.

I think most of the hype around this song has been because of the racy video (3 naked french models walking down the street in daylight is an easy way to get attention), but the song is catchy enough to earn more than a few plays.

The whole song is in french and talks about all the things this particular girl wants. It name drops Handsome Clothing favorites such as Sebastien Tellier and Jutice’s Xavier and Gaspard saying things like…

“I want to have Sebastien Tellier on my Ipod ; I want your Mom’s credit card ; I want your dad’s car ; I want to go out with your friends ; I will wear my cutest panties ; I want a hot sex session ; You can look but you can’t touch.

I want to be in Justice top friend ; Gaspard’s hand on my thigh ;”

SCANDALOUS!

Sexually charged vocals, lyrics, and video. You win this time Make The Girl Dance.

G.I Joe

Friday, January 30, 2009

I can’t tell you how excited this image makes me. Yes, that is right, it is Snake Eyes from everyone’s favorite childhood toy, G.I. Joe. My buddy Pete sent this to me and I nearly crapped myself in excitement. In my basement Voltron and various G.I. Joe’s DID NOT get along. Most of the time Voltron would stomp out the G.I. Joe’s pretty easily (I’ve been a fan of robots over humans for a long time now) but sometimes Snake Eyes would get real pissed (pissed drunk… not pissed off… Snake Eyes had a drinking problem in my world) and start slicing and dicing with that sword of his. Those were always pretty epic battles. Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes were always my boys when it came to fighting time.

Well my prayers have been answered and now there’s a movie coming out that will hopefully bring to life the fantasies I played out as a youngling. I’m a little worried because Marlon Wayans is playing Rip Cord but I think I can let it slide because they got Dennis Quaid to play General Hawk. I wasn’t ready for Robert Downey Jr. to play Iron Man but he was a great surprise, hopefully this is more of the same.

Remember the Mortal Combat movie? Yea? Well that was amazing so hopefully this is the same (complete with badass electronic soundtrack so you and your friends can fire up that ghetto blaster and do a little sparring. I promise its not homo-erotic at all).

Release date is summer 2009. Start getting excited.

Streetlife DJs

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Well this is my first post in ‘09. It’s taken a long time to settle into ‘09 for me but I’m finally back in my apartment and all settled in and ready for another year of being a cultural sponge. On to the music…

For a while I was a little nervous about DJing at the latest Rollin’ & Scratchin’ event but all that immediately went away when I found two of the Streetlife DJs’ latest gems. I don’t know how familiar you are with the Streetlife DJs but if you aren’t you should immediately jump on their growing bandwagon. They have an impeccable ear for classic pop music and are able to always squeeze out the most from their remixes.

The two I have for you to hear are an amazing re-work of E.L.O.’s anthemic “Don’t Bring Me Down” and an absolute mental take on the classic “Peter Gunn Theme”. If you don’t recognize that name you, you’ll recognize the sound as soon as it kicks in. It was also the main theme for the video game Spy Hunter. Badass game and badass song.

Oh and here’s said about them to get you excited in the pants.

Look out for these cats in ‘09.

2008 Year End Lists

Thursday, December 25, 2008

Brian got us started off with a great year end list so it’s about time I chime in as well. Here we go:

Top 5 Albums

1. M83 - Saturdays = Youth

Mirroring the minds tendency to only remember the good, Anthony Gonzalez revisits his formative years to make an album that is able to capture everything great about the 80s and touch up everything that wasn’t. One of a select few artists that are able to create full albums that are enjoyable from beginning to end, this french producer made an album from the past that sounds completely new.

2. The Cool Kids - The Bake Sale

In a year that has seen rap hit new lows (a circus freak named T-Pain and the abuse of the auto-tune), The Cool Kids single-handedly brought cool back to a genre in desperate need. This album can appeal to such a wide variety of people, it’s no wonder it’s such a success. Whether you’re a music freak who obsesses over the sparsely perfect production, a fan of the flow that revels in the ease that Antoine “Mikey Rocks” Reed and Evan “Chuck Inglish” Ingersoll communicate, a lyrics man who laughs along with the tongue and cheek rhymes, or just a fashion fiend who appreciates the forward thinking threads that The Cool Kids have adopted as their signature style. Let’s hope that in 2009 rappers stop trying to be Cher and bring the same originality that The Cool Kids brought us in ‘08.

3. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

Recording the basic tracks of the album in his father’s hunting lodge deep in the woods of Wisconsin, Justin Vernon creates an almost heartbreaking recreation of the sparse and harsh beauty of winter.

4. Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles

I got into this CD late because of listening to a bunch of Crystal Castles in ‘07 but the album is surprisingly good. Anyone who reads this blog knows my love for 8-bit sounds and Crystal Castles do it in the best way possible. ‘Nuff said.

5. Girl Talk - Feed The Animals

I honestly didn’t understand why people liked Girl Talk after his first album. It was way too hectic and A.D.D. for me. He wasn’t able to allow any of the songs to breathe and it all kind of sounded like a jumbled mess. With ‘Feed the Animals’ Girl Talk has honed his skills and compiled a mish mash of classic songs that creates a straight up feel good, sing-a-long, party album. Nicely done.

Top 5 Shows

(I shouldn’t really get to participate in this because I only saw 3 shows but they were all pretty rad shows so I will comment on them anyway.)

1. Justice - Montreal

I was lucky enough to attend this show (almost) completely sober and experience all the raw energy of Justice and the crowd (if you’ve seen the DVD in A Cross The Universe, the scene where the shirtless guy is making a blood curdling scream towards the sky at what I can only imagine are the Electro Rock Gods was the Montreal concert). After being completely satisfied by a nice re-working of ‘Cross’ I was awarded with a Justice remix of Metallica. As a giant fan of both Metallica and Justice it immediately became one of my favorite concert moments of all time.

2. Radiohead - Glasgow, Scotland

I truly felt like I was watching rock royalty during this show. They worked the crowd just as you would imagine them, playing hit after hit (with such a large and illustrious catalogue it makes it easy for them). There are so many memories from this show that it’s hard to pick just one but I will go with singing Fake Plastic Trees with thousands of drunk Scottish people as the rain began to pummel us from above. That’s Scotland for ya.

3. Yelle - Toronto

This was a solid concert that had a very carefree and playful attitude to it. I had a damn hard time singing along to words I didn’t know and songs I didn’t understand, but Yelle made it clear that it didn’t matter that a lot of the crowd wasn’t familiar with any songs besides “A Cause de Garcons”, she was here to have a good time. Having TEPR and Grand Marnier backing her up was a great treat as well.

Top 5 Remixes

1. Vitaminsforyou - B4U (TMDP Remix)

A journey of a song that has sounds you’ve never heard before. When the laser synth starts hitting later in the song I have to close my eyes to avoid sensory overload.

1. Kanye West - Love Lockdown (1994 PILOTPRIEST Remix)

I have to tie this with TMDP’s remix because I really can’t pick a favorite between the two. I have 3 songs by this relatively unknown artist (outside of Toronto that is), and they always make it into my setlists. Someone please give this guy a ton of money so we can hear what he can do with a whole album.

3. Robbie Robb - In Time (Futurecop! Remix)

A perfect pairing. I feel like Futurecop! started making music just so they could eventually remix this song.

4. Van She - Changes (G.L.O.V.E.S. Remix)

This song is always appropriate to play. I guarentee you’ll be singing “Orange juice won’t stain” for hours after you hear this song. I can’t wait to hear what G.L.O.V.E.S. does in ‘08.

5. Kid Cudi - Day ‘N’ Night (Crookers Remix)

Dagada Dagada Dagada Dagada BAOOOM BAOOM BAOOM! Dagada Dagada Dagada Dagada BAOOOMBAOOMBAOOMBAOOM! If it wasn’t so good I would wish that didn’t get stuck in my head every time I hear it. Undeniably catchy.

Kanye West + PILOTPRIEST

Friday, December 19, 2008

Well it get’s my vote. Maybe it’s the cool California air after being in Arizona for so long, but this song has blown me away. If you don’t know PILOTPRIEST you better get learning fast. Joining TMDP, Barletta, and Gingy; PILOTPRIEST is putting Toronto on the map for electronic music. He’s shown what he can do before with remixes for M.I.A. and Run DMC, and he does it again for Kanye West this time.

He takes takes Kanye’s brutal ‘Love Lockdown’ and turns it into a good old fashioned electro banger. As the name of the remix suggests, there are some spot on 90s synths going on in this but don’t be fooled, this is not your older brothers dance music. If anything this is could be a glimpse into the future.

Are bangers coming back in ‘09? They are if PILOTPRIEST has anything to say about it.
